GUT HEALTH

Find out what gut health is, why it’s so important and how you can improve yours

What is it?

Your digestive system (A.K.A. the gut) is the long tube that starts at your mouth, down your esophagus, through your stomach, intestines and ends at your colon and anus.

Why is it so important?

Your gut is responsible for and involved in a plethora of functions which keep your body healthy and running optimally:

  • Metabolism⁣

  • Digestion⁣

  • Nutrient absorption OR malabsorption⁣

  • Control of Inflammation⁣

  • Detoxification⁣

  • Mood & Serotonin production

  • Blood sugar regulation⁣

  • Immune function

Think of your digestive system as the first point of contact between the things that you put into your mouth and the inside of your body. Inside our intestines, we all have resident bacteria, referred to as the gut microbiome or gut flora, which are involved in numerous functions vital to your health and wellbeing.

The walls that line your digestive tract play an important role in your health as well since they have the ability to regulate which nutrients pass through while keeping other harmful compounds out of your system. Your gut essentially acts as a gatekeeper. However, your gut’s ability to act as a gatekeeper ability can wear down over time and with your lifestyle.

The balance of gut bacteria and degree of intestinal permeability is largely influenced by lifestyle factors such as:

  • Poor diet

  • Sugars & Sweets

  • Low in dietary fiber

  • Stress

  • Lack of exercise

  • Red meat consumption

  • Alcohol intake

  • Prescription medications (particularly antibiotics and acid blockers)

If any of these are relatable or present in your lifestyle, you might want to consider looking more into how your gut health is impacting your overall health.

The balance of your gut is highly dependent on the types of foods you eat, whether they provide food for the beneficial bacteria in your gut OR the pathogenic bacteria in your gut will lead to inflammation, weight gain, and disease.

It’s likely that the general healthfulness of your diet and lifestyle affects your risk of chronic inflammation and conditions linked to it.

Unlike Vegas, what happens in the gut, does not stay in the gut”

What Can Happen?

Your gut health has a major influence on one’s level of inflammation, nutrient absorption, metabolism, mood, immune system and brain health.

What is important to understand is that gut issues are not confined to tummy aches, gas and the occasional bout of constipation.

Many systemic illnesses and chronic conditions, including mental health, are influenced by the health of one’s gut and digestive health.

Inflammation is at the root of many modern-day conditions

Excessive Inflammation is the gateway to Chronic Disease & Poor Health

A multitude of conditions and imbalances are caused by inflammation.

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Diabetes

  • Fatigue & low energy levels

  • Brain fog

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Autoimmune issues

  • Depression, Anxiety & Anger

  • Low thyroid function

  • Skin conditions (acne; psoriasis, eczema)

As you can see, the gut is linked to just about every organ from your heart to your brain to your skin. If you deal with skin issues, before spending money on creams, topicals, procedures and prescriptions, consider healing your gut. The appearance of your skin can be a direct reflection of the health of your gut.
